Islamic Distiller: A Mosque Design Solving Water Scarcity Issues

Revolutionizing Mosque Architecture with Sustainable Water Solutions

Based on the designer's volunteer experience in Cairo, the Islamic Distiller aims to tackle the pervasive deficiency in water supply and sanitation in the city. This innovative design proposes a solution that can be applied to small mosques found throughout Cairo, incorporating a solar distiller system within an octagonal umbrella structure that echoes local religious patterns.

What sets the Islamic Distiller apart is its ability to integrate seamlessly into the daily lives of local residents. Recognizing that mosques are the most frequented public places for Muslims, the design takes into account their habits and needs. By utilizing an umbrella-shaped structure, rainwater collected on the surface is distilled into potable water through solar energy.

The upper surface of the umbrella structure features a thin membrane with a low center and a high periphery. Solar energy causes water from below to evaporate and condense onto the membrane. The condensed water then converges to the lowest point in the center, where it is collected and transported to water tanks or taps through pipes inside the columns below.

This design offers a sustainable and scalable solution to alleviate water scarcity problems not only in Cairo but also throughout the developing Islamic region. By incorporating contemporary architecture and technical innovation, the Islamic Distiller showcases the potential of green building practices and rainwater harvesting.

The Islamic Distiller has received recognition for its ingenuity and impact. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2023 in the category of Architecture, Building, and Structure Design.
